I especially enjoyed working with licensed characters. There's a certain amount of pressure writing for beloved celebrities. You must meet the business needs of the Hallmark planning teams while staying true to the voice and integrity of the character's creator.
The upside is that I had the priceless opportunity to meet with the giants in the cartoon world. I wrote and collaborated with Charles "Sparky" Schulz, Chuck Jones, Friz Freleng and Jim Davis to name a few. It was a thrill to write for, and get feedback from, the talented people I consider the best in the business.
Snoopy is the classic example of the perfect "bringer" (a greeting card term we use to describe the character that delivers the wish). He is lovable and upbeat, yet he can be sarcastic and a little mischievous. His animated gestures and exaggerated facial expressions can easily brighten someone's day. What better spokesanimal to have on the cover of a greeting card?
Here's one of the many Snoopy cards I wrote over the years.
Through his actions, Snoopy will always elevate clever prose.
